Captured pest ratsWe have current projects running in Australia and SE Asia on vertebrate pest problems. We are also actively engaged in collaboration and consultancies (see below) to solve specific rodent management problems.



Consultancy examples

Rodents in Agriculture - International

Participate as a consultant and collaborative research scientist for the International Rice Research Institite, Los Banos, Philippines: "Rodent impacts on rice production in Asia". (May 2001 to present).

4-year part-time consultancy with Natural Resources Institute, UK, in Bangladesh on a project entitled "Ecologically-based rodent management for diversified rice-based cropping systems". (April 2002 to December 2005).

2-year part-time consultancy with World Vision Australia in Mekong delta, Vietnam, on "Rodent control in rice crops using IPM techniques". (February 2001 to December 2002).

Revision of systematics and development of country-specific taxonomic keys for rodents in Lao PDR and Vietnam. (September 2000 to March 2002).

1-week consultancy on "Assessment of rodent problems and potential management options in tidal swamp agricultural systems in the transmigration regions of South Sumatera, Indonesia". (1998).

3-week consultancy on "A review of the management of rodent pests in Cambodian lowland rice fields". (1998).


Rodents in Agriculture - Australia

1-week consultancy on rodents in grain storage and processing facilities (2001).

1-week consultancy: "Scoping study into the potential health risks and possible control strategies of rodents in North Queensland fruit-growing areas".

Field trials of efficacy of rodenticides:
-   zinc phosphide in NW Victoria (March 1997)
-   brodifacoum in Wimmera region, Victoria (Spring 1996)
-   strychnine in SE Queensland (Aug to Sep 1995)

Desk top review and survey of pig producers: rodent management in pig production units (1996).


Urban Rodents

Rodent management in stored food environments (Sydney) - 2 week consultancy (2002).

Rodent management options in suburban (north Sydney) - 2 week consultancy (2001).

Rodent management issues in suburban (eastern) Melbourne - 1 month consultancy (1998).


International Training and Lecture Courses

Facilitated a two-day workshop in September 2004 to develop a rodent management handbook for Vietnam, sponsored by World Vision and ACIAR (completion June 2005).

Conducted a training course on “Rodent biology and management” funded by ATSE Crawford Fund, IRRI, and ACIAR. Three week course held at IRRI, Philippines in May 2003.

Lectures and syllabus development on wildlife management, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta. Indonesia, (March 1999; April 2000; February 2001).

Web-based training modules on (i) Rodent Biology; (ii) Rodent management, for IRRI, Philippines (Part-time: October to December 2001).

NorFA (Nordisk Forskerutdanningsakademi) course on "Applied Rodent Population Dynamics", Tune, Denmark, 1-week residential course. (February 1999).

Crawford Master Class in "Vertebrate Pest Management", 3-week course coordinated by the CSIRO Rodent Group.
