Objectives and Outcomes
The overall aim of the project is to develop a social-ecological
framework for landscape planning. For this framework to represent
landscape as a whole it must include social, ecological and
economic aspects, i.e. the natural, cultural, visual, social
and economic dimensions and their linkages and interrelationships.
This was considered important in order to overcome the existing
divide between production and protection landscapes.
Unique farm landscape - Mossman
The project objectives are to:
- Bridge the gap between protection (natural) and production
(cultural) landscapes in the Wet Tropics;
- Understand farmers' and land managers' goals and aspirations
regarding the use and management of their land;
- Generate future landscape visions with the community that
take into account local economic, social, and environmental
values;
- Explore the potential trade-offs between landscape scenarios
taking a systems approach;
- Provide a forum where learning can take place;
- Assist local planning and policy development; and
- Learn from the case studies and transfer this knowledge
to other landscapes in Australia that are undergoing similar
changes.
Anticipated Outcomes
This research attempts to help farmers and the wider community
identify options for diversifying income sources, plan for
their future and participate in the process of directing change
towards sustainable future landscapes.
