Nick Abel

Core Researcher

Nick.Abel@csiro.au

Nick is interested in the evolution of socio-ecological systems and the role of institutions in human adaptation. He has skills in economics, participative research, and range ecology (Africa and Australia).

Brendon Baker

Workshop Facilitator

Brendon is a specialist in Geographical Information Systems and Landscape Ecology and has postgraduate qualifications in Environmental Law. His work in this project included biophysical assessment, legal reviews and workshop facilitation.

Guy Barnett

Workshop Facilitator

Guy.Barnett@csiro.au

Guy is a landscape ecologist with skills in the rehabilitation of damaged lands, particularly those affected by dryland salinity and mining activities. His current research interests include the application of ecological knowledge to the design and construction of sustainable human habitat.

Margaret Cawsey

Workshop Facilitator

Margaret.Cawsey@csiro.au

Margaret's interests include integrated data management (relational database and GIS), metadata, data model design, database design, experimental design, survey design, prediction of both plant and animal distributions (spatial and temporal), generalised linear and additive predictive modelling, systems modelling, pattern analysis, scale issues.

Tim Ferraro

Workshop Facilitator

Tim is currently Executive Officer of WEST 2000/WEST 2000 Plus which are rural partnership programs operating in the Western Division of NSW. Interests are Integrated Catchment Management, Rangeland Management and Community Change/Capacity Building.

Julian Gorman

Project Support

Julian's interests include: sustainable use of rangelands and tropical savannas; impacts of climate change;ã sustainable harvesting of flora and fauna; development of plant industry enterprises in Aboriginal communities; and landscape health.

Russel Harland

Workshop Facilitator

Russel Harland, a key member of the team, died suddenly in November 2002. Our friend and colleague was a rangeland ecologist with nearly two decades experience in the Western Division. He was active in regional and catchment planning for DLWC and maintained a strong involvement in community programs such as Property Management Planning, Landcare, Rivercare and Waterwatch. We miss him.

Mark Howden

Collaborating Researcher and Facilitator Climate Change

Mark.Howden@csiro.au

Mark has extensive experience in ecosystem dynamics, simulation modelling of grazing and cropping systems, global change impacts and adaptation, greenhouse gas emission assessment and mitigation, development of new approaches to manage climate variability.

John Ive

Collaborating Researcher and Facilitator Land Use Planning

The focus of John's work is to extend broad base land use planning principles to assist land managers integrate non-productive an productive land uses. This achieves reductions in environmental degradation and facilitates more sustainable production systems.

Art Langston

Core Researcher

Art.Langston@csiro.au

Art is a specialist in Geographic Information Systems and Satellite Remote Sensing. He maintains an active interest in complex adaptive systems and conservation ecology.

Steve Marsden

Collaborating Researcher Carbon Modelling

Steve has an extensive background in rangeland research. His speciality is simulation modelling of semi-arid grazing systems and he has been involved in a project looking at total grazing pressure in the rangelands.

Terry Mazzer

Workshop Facilitator

Terry has a strong background in rangeland ecology and biodiversity. He has a particular interest in the frogs and reptiles of the semi-arid areas of NSW. He is currently the ecologist for the Far West Region (Western Division) of the NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation.

Dee Murdoch

Workshop Facilitator

Dee is a training consultant within the Natural Resource Management unit of NSW Department of Land and Water Conservation.

Nick Nicholls

Collaborating Researcher and Facilitator Biodiversity Conservation

Nick is particularly interested in the impacts of management practices on species survival. He has skills in experimental and survey design and statistical analysis across a wide range of biological communities.

Robert Palmer

Project Support

Robert.Palmer@csiro.au

Robert has a background in arid zone ecology and more recently has worked on projects looking at the relationships between wildlife and remnant vegetation. He has now taken up the position as Collection Manager of the Australian National Wildlife Collection.

Jen Shearing

Jacqui Stol

Project Support and Facilitator

Jacqui.Stol@csiro.au

Jacqui has a strong background in arid zone vegetation as well as a general depth of experience in rangeland ecosystems. She recently worked on a project looking at the impacts of artificial water sources on biodiversity in Australia's rangelands.

Bill Tatnell

Core Researcher

Bill's started his career investigating the ecological control of rabbits. He has a long involvement with the Western Division and DLWC, experience which proved useful in his role as the Regional Manager for the Division. He is presently concentrating his efforts as a Landscape Manager in the Lower Murray Darling.

Mandy Yialeloglou
