Software Development at CSE

CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems (CSE) has developed many specialised software applications for commercial use both through specific research need and as client-driven tools.

Software types include:

  • agricultural production simulators
  • decision support tools
  • ecological statistics packages
  • spreadsheet statistics utilities
  • statistical pattern analysis applications, and
  • modelling and support applications for sustainble buildings, infrastructure and energy management.

Product examples

Some software application examples are given below with links provided to those with further information or availability:

Infrastructure and planning support

AccuRate

AccuRate supports compliance with the energy efficient residential building design rules in the new 2006 Building Code of Australia.
>>  It is distributed through Hearne Scientific Software.

Energy Express

AccuRate supports compliance with the energy efficient commercial building design rules in the new 2006 Building Code of Australia with a focus on energy consumption and cost.
>>  It is distributed through Hearne Scientific Software.

Designcheck

Designcheck provides automated checking of designs against building codes.  A pre-release version is available and the developers are seeking a commercial partner.

LCADesign

LCADesign (Life Cycle Analysis of Design) will enable building design professionals to make informed decisions on the environmental impact of commercial buildings by providing detailed environmental and cost measures for different materials, products and designs, automatically from their 3D CAD drawings.  First prototype completed and tested. New pre-commercial version commencing soon.
>> More information from CRC for Construction Innovation.

Automated Estimator

Automated Estimator is a computer software tool that automatically generates a bill of quantities (BoQ) and cost estimate from a 3D CAD building model. Second prototype completed. Seeking a commercial partner.
>> More information from CRC for Construction Innovation.

Contact: Dr Robin Drogemuller

Automated Scheduler

Automatic Scheduler can provide a framework for a practical approach to the partial automation of drafting construction schedules for full-scale projects. This tool is applicable to projects that are built on a repeated basis such as multi-storey buildings and highway bridges. First prototype completed. Approval granted for second stage of development.

NEMSIM

NEMSIM is the National Electricity Market Simulator, developed within the Energy Transformed Flagship and support from CSIRO's Complex Systems Science area and CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research.

NEMSIM will be commercialised by Core Collaborative Pty Ltd under the name GENERSYS after an agreement signed in 2006.

Ecological and statistical modelling

Mouser

"MOUSER" is an interactive training and resource package that provides decision support for the management of mouse plagues in Australia. The package, which is designed to operate from a CD-ROM run on a personal computer was developed by the CSE Rodent Management team. >>  More

PATN

A comprehensive and versatile software package for extracting and displaying patterns in multivariate data. Note: sales and distribution of PATN have now been transferred away from CSE.  >>  More details on the PATN Web site

PopTools: (free for non commercial use)

A versatile add-in for PC versions of Microsoft Excel (97, 2000 or XP) that facilitates analysis of matrix population models and simulation of stochastic processes. It was originally written to analyse ecological models, but has much broader application. It has been used for studies of population dynamics, financial modelling, calculation of bootstrap and resampling statistics, and can be used for preparing spreadsheet templates for teaching statistics.

Agricultural production simulation

APSIM

A collaborative development through the Agricultural Production Systems Research Unit (APSRU). APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems Simulator) is a highly customisable agricultural system simulator.
